Rice Grain Upma

Upma is a south Indian breakfast recipe which is usually prepared with Suzi rava (Coarse wheat). This recipe is prepared with rice grains which is very healthy and easy to digest.


a) Rice : 250 Grams
b) Oil : 4 tsp
c) Bengal Gram (Chana Dal) : 2tsp
d) Ground Nuts : 50 Grams.
e) Onions (Chopped) : 2 Nos
f) Curry Leaves-
g) Green Chillies : 4 Nos
h) Red Chillies : 1 Nos.
i) Mustard seeds : 1tsp.
j) Cumin seeds : 1 tsp.
k) Black Gram dal(Whole): 2tsp


1. Grind rice in a mixer to the size of small grains(Not to be powdered) and then fry till light brown (Without adding oil).
2.Heat oil in a frying pan ,add above ingredients and fry till light brown.
3. Add water 3 times ( in 1:3 ratio) ,salt and let the water reach the boiling point.
4. Now slowly pour the Rice grains in the boiled water and stir continously to prevent formation of lumps in the mixture . Now cover the Pan with lid and let the Mixture cook on low flame till done.
5. Now serve Upma hot with either Chutney or Sauce.
