Onion Pesarattu Upma

Pesarattu  is Andhra's traditional breakfast item which is prepared with green gram (Pesara pappu in telugu and Moong dal in Hindi) batter like a flat bread similar to Dosa. It makes a delicious mouthwatering combination with Upma.Pesarattu upma is a very famous breakfast and snack item in Andhra. Plain Pesarattu, Onion Pesarattu and Ginger Pesarattu are some various types of flat bread prepared with green gram batter. Here's the method for preparing onion pesarattu.

Ingredients for Pesarattu

Green gram (Moong Dal/Pesarappu) : 250 gms
Onion : 2 (Finely chopped)
Green Chillies : 2 (Finely chopped)
Red Chillies : 3
Ginger : 1 inch thick piece
Cumin seeds : 2 tea spoon
Salt : As per Taste


Wash and soak the green gram (Moong Dal) in water for 2 hours
Grind soaked green gram, red chillies, ginger, 1 tea spoon cumin seeds into smooth batter
Add 1 tea spoon cumin seeds and salt as per taste to the batter, mix well
Heat a tawa,  add 2 tea spoons oil and spread the batter in round flat bread shape like dosa
Roast on slow flame for 2 minutes and add chopped oinons an green chillies on it as shown in the picture
Now turn the pesarattu to other side, add 1 tea spoon oil and roast on slow flame for 2 minutes
Turn over the pesarattu to the previous state and stuff upma in the middle
Fold both ends into middle and roast for 1 minute
Delicious onion pesarattu upma is ready to serve
Serve hot with ginger or coconut chutney
