Kalayi Roti - Kalayi Kudumu

Kalayi Roti is a pancake prepared in a karahi (wok) with idli batter. If you get bored with routine steamed idli
here is a simple and tasty recipe to try some thing different with the same idli batter.


Black gram dal (Minapa Pappu) : 1 cup
Idli Rava : 3 cups
Salt : As per taste
Oil : 6 tea spoons

Method (for preparing batter)

Wash and soak Black gram dal (Minapa pappu) for 6-7 hours
Wash and soak Idli Rava (Rice rava) for 5-6 hours
Grind the soaked Black gram into thick paste
Squeeze the water form idli rava and add to ground dal
Add salt, mix well and make a smooth batter. Keep overnight for fermentation.

Method (for preparing Kalayi Roti)

Heat 4 tea spoons oil in a deep bottomed karahi (Wok)
Add 6 tables spoons of batter, cover with a lid and allow to cook on slow flame for 10 minutes
Now gently turn the roti to other side add 2 tea spoons oil and cook on slow flame for 5 minutes
Delicious Kalayi Roti is ready to serve
Serve hot with Chutney
