Momo is a Tibetan dish and also very famous in Nepal, Bhutan and north eastern states of India. It's a type of dumpling prepared with flour dough and filled with either vegetables or non veg like chicken (Chicken momos)/mutton ( goat meat) etc... Momos can either be steamed or fried.
It's one of my favorite appetizer and I like steamed momos because they are more tasty and healthier than the fried ones. All most all every Chinese restaurant in India have momos on their menu. The preparation of Momos at home is a very simple and easy procedure and we all know that home food is healthier than the hotel. So why not prepare momos at home? Here's the simple step by step procedure for making momos at home.
Ingredients
For Cover
All purpose flour (Maida) : 1 cup
Baking powder : 1/2 tea spoon
Salt : 1/2 tea spoon
Water
For stuffing
Onion : 2 (Finely chopped)
Green chillies : 2 (Finely chopped)
Potato : 2 (cut into very small pieces)
Carrot : 2 (Grated)
Green Peas : 1/2 cup
Soy sauce : 2 tea spoons
Chilly sauce : 2 tea spoons
Tomato sauce : 3 tea spoons
Ginger garlic paste : 1 tea spoon
Garam masala powder : 1/2 tea spoon
Vinegar : 1 tea spoon
Salt : as per taste
Oil : 1 table spoon
Method
Take a bowl add all purpose flour (Maida), baking powder, salt and make a tight dough (Like chapati dough) by adding little water at a time. Cover the dough with a cloth and keep aside.
Heat oil in a wok/karahi add chopped onions, green chillies and fry till onion turns slightly pink
Add ginger garlic paste and stir fry for 2 minutes
Add potato pieces, grated carrot, green peas and fry on slow flame for 5 minutes.
Add garam masala powder, salt as per taste and stir fry for 2 minutes.
Add soy, chilly, tomato sauce and mix well
Finally add vinegar mix well and keep aside
Make 1 inch diameter balls with maida flour dough.
Roll the dough ball into flat round shape (like puri/chapati). Keep slightly thick at the center to avoid the stuff coming out of the momo while steaming.
Add a spoonful of veg stuff prepared above and cover the ends as shown in the picture.
Momos are steamed in a specially made steam cooker. In the absence of steam cooker Idli cooker with holes in the idli slot can do the job. I used idli cooker for this purpose.
Place the momos on the slots as shown in the picture and steam cook for 10 minutes
Delicious mouth watering momos are ready to serve.
Serve hot with tomato and chilly sauce.
