Beera kaya Pottu Pachadi - Ridge Gourd Skin Chutney

Ridge gourd skin is very high in dietary fibre and a very rich source of Vitamin C, Zinc, Magnesium and Iron.
In Andhra the ridge gourd skin is normally used for making a very famous chutney recipe known as "Beerakaya Pottu Pachadi". This chutney recipe is not only healthy but also very tasty and very easy to prepare. 

Beerakaya pottu ( Ridge gourd skin ) : 1 cup
Red chilies :3
Garlic : 4 (cloves)
Bengal gram dal : 2 tea spoons
Black gram dal : 1 tea spoon
Cumin seeds : 1 tea spoon
Coriander seeds : 1 tea spoon
Curry leaves : few
Tamarind : small lemon size
Sugar : 1/2 spoon
Oil : 2 tea spoons
Salt to taste.

For seasoning

Mustard seeds : 1 tea spoon
Black gram dal : 1 tea spoon
Curry leaves : few


Heat oil in a pan add garlic cloves, red chillies, bengal gram dal, black gram dal, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and curry leaves fry till they turn brown and keep aside.
Now add little oil in a pan add ridge gourd skin  fry for 5 minutes on low flame.
Grind the fried ingredients and ridge gourd skin into smooth paste by adding sugar, tamarind and salt.


Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, black gram dal and curry leaves fry till mustard starts splitting. 
Add ground paste and mix well.
Serve as side dish along with rice or roti.
