Upma - Semolina/Sooji Rava Upma

Upma is the most common and famous South Indian breakfast recipe which is very delicious and very easy to prepare. It's prepared with coarse wheat granules known as Bombay Rava (Semolina/Sooji) which is packed with lots of health benefits. Here's the basic and very simple upma recipe for starters.

Sooji/Rava (Semolina) : 1 cup
Water : 2 cups (For upma Sooji and water ratio = 1:2)
Onion : 2 medium sized (Chopped)
Green Chillies : 2 chopped
Ginger : Small piece (finely chopped)
Chana Dal (Bengal gram) : 2 tea spoon
Urad Dal (Black gram) : 2 tea spoon
Mustard seeds : 1 tea spoon
Cumin seeds : 1 tea spoon
Curry leaves :  Few
Cashew nuts : (Optional)
Ghee : 4 tea spoon
Oil : 3 tea spoon
Salt as per tatse


Heat ghee in a dry pan add Sooji (Semolina) and fry on slow flame till it turns light brown color
Transfer sooji into a dry plate or tray and keep aside
Heat oil in a wok or pan add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bengal gram (chana dal), black gram (urad dal), curry leaves and fry till mustard starts splitting.
Now add sliced onion, green chillies, ginger and fry till onion turns light pink color
Add salt and 2 cups of water, cover with a lid and allow it boil on  a high flame till water starts boil. (At this point you can check the salt and adjust according to you taste).
Now reduce the flame and add Sooji (semolina) slowly slowly and keep on stirring the mixture to avoid lumps.
Keep on stirring till all the water drains and mixture becomes thick
Now add 2 tea spoons of ghee (optional),  cover with a lid and keep on slow flame for 2 minutes
Garnish with fried cashew nuts (optional)
Serve hot with chutney or sauce

Rice Grain Upma

Upma is a south Indian breakfast recipe which is usually prepared with Suzi rava (Coarse wheat). This recipe is prepared with rice grains which is very healthy and easy to digest.
